This British-made main battle tank (MBT) was produced in the 1960’s. It was developed to replace the Centurion tank in the British Army. It was sold to various countries, including Iran, Jordan, Oman and Kuwait. The IDF received two such tanks before the 1967 Six Day War, for study and testing, in preparation of possible purchase. However, the British eventually refused to supply the tank to Israel due to a weapon embargo. The Chieftain was retired from the British Army in 1995.
