אלברט הראשון
1875-1934

אלברט הראשון הוכתר למלך הבלגים בשנת 1909. נודע בתואר "המלך האביר" בשל גבורתו בקרבות מלחמת העולם הראשונה. בשנת 1933 ביקר בתל-אביב והתארח אצל ראש העירייה, מאיר דיזנגוף, שהיה אז קונסול כבוד של בלגיה. אחרי שנספה המלך בתאונת טיפוס הרים בשנת 1934, החליטה מועצת עיריית תל-אביב לקרוא כיכר זו על שמו. אלמנתו, המלכה אליזבט, הצילה את חייהים של יהודים רבים בזמן מלחמת העולם השנייה. לימים הוענק לה אות "חסידת אומות העולם". עד מותה בשנת 1965 פעלה המלכה רבות לקידום האמנות והתרבות.

Albert I
1875-1934

Albert I, crowned King of the Belgians in 1909, was known as the "Knight King" for his bravery during World War I. In 1933, he visited Tel Aviv where he was hosted by Mayor Meir Dizengoff, then also Honorary Consul of Belgium. After the King’s untimely death in a climbing accident in 1934, the City of Tel Aviv dedicated this square to his memory. His widow, Queen Elisabeth, was granted the title of "Righteous Among the Nations" for saving many Jews during World War II. A renowned patron of the arts, she died in 1965.
