עץ ממשפחת הוורדיים, מקור העץ בדרום מזרח סין. לישראל הגיע במאה ה -19, וכיום גדל בכל רחבי הארץ. הפריחה מתחילה בסתיו והפרי, שצורתו סגלגלה וצבעו צהוב, נקטף בחודשים אפריל-מאי. לפרי גרעינים שחורים גדולים.
