בביקורו ההיסטורי של קיסר גרמניה וילהלם ה-2 בארץ ישראל, בסוף 1898, עלה הקיסר מיפו לירושלים בשיירת מרכבות, אך ירד חזרה לשפלה ברכבת מיוחדת וחגיגית, שהופעלה במיוחד עבורו ועבור פמלייתו ב-3.11.1898. לכבוד הביקור, שינתה ירושלים את פניה – דרכים הורחבו, רחובות נוקו, שווקים שופצו והעיר לבשה ארשת חג את פני הקיסר קיבלו בני כל העדות ומכל העולם הגיעו צלמים וכתבים לסקר את האירוע המרגש.

During the historic visit to Palestine of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1898, he traveled from Jaffa to Jerusalem in a convoy of carriages, but returned to the lowlands on a festive railcar operated especially for him and his entourage, November 3, 1898. In honor of the visit, Jerusalem took on a new look. Roads were expanded, streets cleaned, markets were refurbished and the city wore a holiday air. All of the city’s ethnic, communities turned out to welcome the kaiser, with photographers and reporters arriving from around the world to cover the exciting event.
