Taxodium distichum

העץ הוא קרוב משפחה של עצי הסקוויה (עצים מס.30 Click for sign's details ו-31 Click for sign's details).

Swamp Cypress (Bald Cypress)
Taxodium distichum

Natural range: S.E. USA

In spite of its name, this is not a cypress, but a relative of the Sequoias (trees 30 Click for sign's details and 31 Click for sign's details). Like them, its leaves form two parallel rows along thin twigs. Atypically for a conifer, in winter its leaves turn brown and often drop.

[a question]
As the name suggests, this tree lives in swamps. What enables a tree to live in water? And how can the same tree grow here in arid Israel?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
In swamps, special hollow projections of this tree’s roots, called "knees," grow upward above the water level and take in air. Here, no swamp, no knees; but the campus sprinklers provide enough moisture for survival.
