Celtis australis

Nettle Tree
Celtis australis

Natural range: S. Europe to Iran

Though hidden by bushes and climbers, this tree shows several traits of its family, the elms (as in trees 25 Click for sign's details and 45): Saw-tooth leaf edges, asymmetric leaves, alternate leaf positions along branches, and tiny flowers whose pollen is dispersed by the wind.

[a question]
Why is this tree named australis? It’s not from Australia!

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
This tree’s name, australis, is Latin for "southern." The tree lives in southern Europe. (The continent of Australia also was so named because of its southern location.)
