Laurus nobilis

תפוצה טבעית: אגן הים התיכון, מספרד דרך ישראל

ביוון וברומא העתיקה, הכתירו בזר מעליו של עץ זה את מי שרצו בכבודו. כיום, השם הלטיני של העץ (laurus) הוא המקור לתארי כבוד כמו Nobel laureate (חתן פרס נובל). ענפיו ירוקי-העד מתאימים לגדר חיה ולגיזום-פיסול בצמחים.

Laurus nobilis

Natural range: Mediterranean basin, from Spain through Israel

In ancient Greece and Rome, wearing a laurel head wreath meant honor. Today the word, not the plant, gives honor, as in Nobel laureate, or baccalaureate degree. Its evergreen branching is suited to trimmed hedges and plant sculptures, called topiary.

You may recognize these leaves’ aroma from your kitchen, as the bay leaves used. to spice soups, stews and other cooked foods.
