Cooperative supermarket
The consumer building was inaugurated on September 26, 1937. The consumer was operated by a cooperative consumer association - Kiryat Avoda Ltd. The consumer was established for the benefit of the residents of Kiryat Avoda, who owned its shares. The idea was to transform the supermarket from an ordinary grocery store into a warehouse for the residents. Other supermarkets operated in Kirya, on Bialik St. and Shankar St., in wooden huts.
For the first few years, food courses for young mothers were held in the supermarket building, in collaboration with the Working Mothers Organization. One of the well-known workers was Shayna Korngold (1889-1972), the older sister of Golda Meir, who lived on Beilinson St., and settled with her husband Shamai in Kirya in 1937.
Today the building is used by the ’Yad Sarah’ association.
