בית הכנסת הגדול נועד מהקמתו לשקף את חשיבות הזהות היהודית של העיר ולאחד בין כתליו את התל-אביבים כולם- דתים וחילוניים, ספרדים ואשכנזים.

בראש הוועד להקמתו עמד ראש העיר מאיר דיזנגוף, שגם גייס כספים לבנייתו.

בית הכנסת שימש לא רק לתפילות אלא גם לטקסים לאומיים, להתכנסויות, לחגים ולהלוויות של גדולי היישוב ונפגעי פרעות.

ביולי 1946 נמצא במרתף בית הכנסת מחסן נשק של מחתרת הלח"י ושמש בית הכנסת נשפט לשנת מאסר.

The Great Synagogue
Built in 1925, Tel Aviv’s Great Synagogue sought to underscore the importance of the city’s Jewish identity and unite all its residents -including religious and secular Jews, Sephardim and Ashkenazim.
Its dimensions and splendor reflected the city’s desire to be a spiritual center.
The synagogue was used for prayer, national ceremonies, gatherings, holidays and funerals of community leaders and victims of attacks on Jews.

الكنيس الأكبر
أقيم في عام 1925 ليعكس أهمية الحفاظ على هوية المدينة اليهودية وجمع كافة سكان تل أبيب تحت سقفه - سواء إن كانوا من اليهود المتدينين أو العلمانيين ، السفاراديين أو الأشكينازيين . كما عكس حجمه الهائل وعظمته رغبة المدينة بأن تكون مركزاً روحانية ، إذ تم استخدام | الكنيس ليس لتأدية الصلوات فحسب وإنما بغرض إقامة المراسم الوطنية والتجمعات والأعياد وجنازات كبار شخصيات المجتمع اليهودي وضحايا الهجمات التي استهدفت اليهوده
