The monument commemorates the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli (1160-1220), who is considered one of the greatest poets of Georgia and of the period in general. The monument is located near the Monastery of the Cross, where he lived after leaving Georgia, apparently in light of a love affair with the Queen of Georgia, whose treasury he was (in 1185).
