The lack of recovery vehicles during World War II prompted the US Army to develop a recovery tank based on the M3 Grant tank chassis, from which the 75 mm hull cannon and 37 mm turret cannon were removed. A crane with a 5-ton lifting capacity without stabilizers and 15-ton capacity with stabilizers was installed. The tank had a recovery drum with 25-ton pulling capacity. The tank was captured from the Egyptian Army during the Sinai Campaign in 1956.
