Pinus pinea

העץ גדל בצורת מטריה (הביטו בו ממרחק), ובזה הוא שונה משני המינים האחרים בקמפוס (עצים מס. 1 Click for sign's details ו-41 (צ"ל 14) Click for sign's details).

Umbrella Pine
Pinus pinea

Natural range: Mediterranean coast, Spain to Lebanon

Pine nuts ("tznobar") that flavor many foods are the seeds from this tree’s cones. The tree’s umbrella shape (seen best from a distance) contrasts with the two other campus pines (trees I Click for sign's details and 14 Click for sign's details). Famed as the "Pines of Rome."

[a question]
The seeds of most pine species are spread by wind, sailing on a wing. But this species’ larger and heavier seeds (pine nuts) have no wings; so how are they spread?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
Umbrella pines depend on animals, mostly rodents and birds, to spread their tasty seeds. Seeds dropped, or hidden for winter use but then not found, can grow into trees.
