Cupressus funebris

Weeping Cypress
Cupressus funebris

Natural range: Himalayas and Central China

Its thin branches drooping, this cypress appears to weep. By contrast, the tall, narrow Italian cypresses (such as the one below the staircase) point joyously heavenward. These two closely related species often stand together at cemeteries, one reflecting despair, the other hope.

[a question]
Note the tiny female (seed-bearing) cones that dangle from these branches. Do they resemble the cones of their close relative, the Italian cypress (such as the narrow tree below the staircase)?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
Like the larger cones of the nearby Italian cypress, this tree’s cones are round and constructed from shield-like plates. In this species, though, each plate bears a short spine. The plates open to release the seeds. (Please don’t pick cones from the tree: you can collect those that have fallen.)
