On the sign:

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
Who’s the male and who’s the female?
With their colorful heads, male Mallards are conspicuous, while females display camouflage coloring that serves them well during brooding. In wintertime, courting males swim behind their mates in order to ward off other males.
Mallards nest on the ground. Chicks follow their mother into the water immediately after hatching, swimming behind her and feeding themselves.
Mallards bills filter water and mud, retaining only the tiny organisms and fragments of vegetation which are their food.
