Bilu
The Bilu Movement was established in Kharkov, on January 21, 1882, by young Jewish Zionists. It was established as a response to the pogroms in Southern Russia. Its name is an acronym for the verse from Isaiah 2:5, "beit yaacov lechu venelcha;" "House of Jacob let us go up". The founders of the Bilu took upon themselves to settle the Land of Israel and "to return to the Jew’s political independence lost from them two thousand years ago."
