Juniperus virginiana

Eastern Red Cedar (Virginia Juniper)
Juniperus virginiana

Natural range: Eastern and Central USA

Not actually a cedar, this American tree belongs to the cypress family. (All cedars, scientifically named Cedrus, are eastern hemisphere natives - trees 16 Click for sign's details,17 Click for sign's details,18 Click for sign's details.) This tree’s aromatic chemicals repel insects. This repellant wood is often used for "cedar" closets and chests.

[a question]
Especially in August or September, you may see a few of this species’ blue "berries" on the branches. (They are fermented to produce gin whiskey.) They are not actually fruits. Why not?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
The blue "berries" seen on this conifer tree develop from its tiny cones. Fruits always develop from flowers, and thus could not grow on non- flowering trees such as this one. Therefore, these berries are not fruits.
