Sequoiadendron giganteum

Giant Sequoia
Sequoiadendron giganteum

Natural range: Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, USA

The most massive trees on earth, their trunks can be up to 11 meters across! Small blackened areas on this flat surface show centuries-old fire damage. Recent fires hollowed out the large bottom space. Felled by a storm in California in 2001.

[a question]
Can you find: The oldest part of this trunk? The annual growth rings, each about 1-2 millimeters wide? About how many rings, from the oldest to the most recent (outer- most) ring?

[The Answer to the question]
This trunk’s oldest part is a prominent circle, high on the right (as viewed with the main campus lawn behind you). From there, the trunk grew in width, but asymmetrically. Counting from the prominent circle downward to the left, there are roughly 2,000 annual rings. Thus, this tree was born about the time the Romans ruled here.
