העץ נקרא על שם נשיאה הראשון של ארה”ב שנחשב לאדם חסון וחזק. העץ, חסון גם הוא, מסוגל לשרוד גם בתנאים קשים, כמו בצורת. על כל עץ וושינגטוניה פרחים נקביים וזכריים, בשונה משני מיני הדקל האחרים בקמפוס (עצים מס. 4 Click for sign's details ו- 42)

Natural range: S.W. USA, N. Mexico

Named for America’s first president, known for his resilience. This tree, likewise resilient, thrives even under harsh conditions, such as draught. Unlike the other two palm species on campus (trees 4 Click for sign's details and 42) each Washingtonia tree has both male and female flowers.

Washingtonia has hand-shaped (that is, palm-shaped) leaves; the date palm has feather-shaped leaves. So it’s easy to tell them apart.
