Byzantine Agriculture in the Negev
During the Byzantine period (fourth-seventh centuries CE), settlement in the Negev flourished, including unprecedented development of the agricultural hinterland. The inhabitants of the Negev were skilled in taking advantage of the region’s meager rainfall, using a marvelous system of channels and terraces to impound alluvial soil and floodwaters. Mainly grapes, olives, pomegranates, wheat and barley were raised on the plots, which were fertilized with dove manure. At Avdat, the farmers also used water from a deep well to nearby plots, thus increasing their agricultural yield.
