האלון הנפוץ ביותר בארץ, הרבה עצים קטנים כמו זה שלפניך מכסים את הרי המרכז והצפון. העצים הגדולים נכרתו, לצערנו. אם נגן עליהם מפני הכורת, בבוא היום יגדלו וייהפכו ליערות.

Palestine Oak

Natural range: N.Africa, S.W. Europe, Israel

Israel’s most common oak, small specimens like this one dot the northern and central mountains. Sadly, many very large specimens have been cut down. If we protect our woodlands, today’s young oaks will some day form forests of massive trees.

[The Answer to the question]
The leaf’s sharp thorns would surely discourage hungry animals. The leaves of some other tree species have bad tasting chemicals or poisons.
