On the sign:
Cycas revoluta

False Sago Palm
Cycas revoluta

Natural range: Japan

Though resembling palms, cycads evolved long before the palms, before the other flowering trees, and before the conifer trees and even before the dinosaurs. The tree before you is a female, and to its right is a male.

[a question]
What’s similar and what’s different in the look of these cycads, as compared to a date palm (tree 4 Click for sign's details, near the corner of the building on your left)?

[The Answer to the question]
Cycad\palm similarities: A crown of large, compound leaves, trunk with no bark, and each tree is either a male or a female. Differences: In cycads, but not palms, small buds are found on the trunk, no flowers, and male tree has cones (late spring to mid-summer).
