4
Phoenix dactylifera

Date Palm
Phoenix dactylifera

Natural range: N. Africa, Middle East, Israel

The bases of old leaves, not bark, cover the palm’s unique trunk. One of Israel’s honored "Seven Species," its leaves serve as both lulav and succah covering. As this particular tree is a male, it bears no fruit.

[The third face of the cube]

[a question]
Which is taller, a date palm leaf, or you?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
Before comparing your height with that of a palm leaf, realize that a whole frond (lulav) with its central, green shaft and many green side leaflets comprises one leaf; it is born, grows, dies and falls as a single unit. Knowing this, you can answer the question.
