צורת החרב של התרמילים נושאי הזרעים של עץ נקבי זה נתנו לו את שמו. עץ חרוב זכרי חסר תרמילים נפגוש במקום אחר בקמפוס. עלי החרוב עבים, מצופים בשכבת שעווה המונעת אידוי מים ומאפשרת את גידולו אף באזורים צחיחים.

Carob
Ceratonia siliqua

Natural range: Saudi Arabia and Somalia

This female tree’s sword-shaped seed pods gave the name "carob" (cherev-sword in Hebrew). Males, lacking seed pods, grow elsewhere on campus. Adapted to arid climates, its thick leaves store water, and their waxy coating limits evaporation.

Legume roots house special bạcteria that bind soil nitrogen to other chemical compounds. Plants can absorb and use only such bound nitrogen. And only from plants can animals and people obtain the nitrogen needed for building the body’s essential proteins.
