הדולב הינו אחד העצים הגדולים בישראל. הוא מתהדר בתפרחות ובפירות כדוריים, ובקליפה משוישת. עליו, שצורתם כצורת כף יד, נושרים בחורף. ארבעה מינים נוספים של הדולב, ה-sycamores (מהמילה העברית שקמה), מוצאם בצפון אמריקה.

Oriental Plane
Platanus orientalis

Natural range: S.W. Asia, Middle East, N.W. Africa, Israel

One of Israel’s largest native trees, its special features include ball-like floral and fruit clusters, and the mottled bark. Hand-shaped leaves drop in winter. The four other Platanus species, all North American, are called sycamores.

ברוב העצים גזעי העצים גדלים בעובי, והקליפה גדלה איתם ונסדקת. בעץ שלפנינו המצב שונה: שכבת הקליפה החדשה, הצבעונית, צומחת מתחת לקליפה הישנה וכאשר הקליפה הישנה ניתקת ונושרת מתגלה השכבה החדשה.

[The Answer to the question]
As a tree’s trunk grows thicker, generally its outer bark cracks and grows to continue covering it. But not in this species; new, expanded bark layers (of different colors) grow underneath the old bark, which then peels away.
