Black Locust
(False Acacia)
Robinia pseudoacacia

Natural range: S.E. USA

Dense clusters of white, fragrant, pea-like flowers hang from these branches in April and May. The shapes of these flowers and of the autumn seed pods show that these trees belong to the legume family, together with peas, beans, and trees 9 (carob) Click for sign's details and 22 (redbud) Click for sign's details.

[a question]
These black locusts lean heavily to one side. Do any other campus trees lean? In the same direction? What might cause this?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
From the adjacent lawn or nearby pavement, yau can see several trees that lean, all towards the east, like this tree. Summer afternoon winds from the west have bent these trees from their upright positions. But winds also help many types of trees, dispersing their pollen and/or their seeds.
