תפוצה טבעית: אפגניסטן ואירן, מערבה לישראל

העץ הראשון המוזכר בתנ"ך; עלה התאנה שימש כסות לאדם וחזה. פרחיו אינם נראים לעין. הם גדלים בתוך הפרי עצמו. צרעות קטנות נכנסות לתך הפרי ומאביקות אותו.

Natural range: Afghanistan and Iran, west into Israel

The first tree specificaliy named in the Bible, as clothing for Adam and Eve. You won’t see its flowers; strangely, they grow inside the fruit. Tiny wasps enter the fruit and pollinate the flower.

A tree’s leaves, all together, make up a very large surface. Some species, like this one, make very large leaves. Why do trees need so much leaf surface?

העלים קולטים את אור השמש. האנרגיה של האור מניעה את ייצור הסוכר שמשמש מזון לעץ. לכן משטחי עלה קולטי אור גדולים יותר, כמו בעליו הגדולים של עץ זה, פירושו יותר מזון.

[The Answer to the question]
Leaves absorb sunlight. The energy of this light powers the making of sugar, the tree’s food. Therefore, more light- absorbing leaf surface, such as from this tree’s big leaves, means more food.
